Kiev Circus was opened in 1961. Circus building is one of the largest domical buildings in Kiev. History of Kiev circus Before 1875 there had been no permanent building of circus in Kiev, but only temporary wooden and canvas covered buildings that were demolished after several months of work.
In 1868 Frenchman Ogust Bergonye bought in Kiev a dale and turned to town council for permission to build on this territory permanent stone circus and soon obtain it. It was situated on the place were now stands the building of National Russian Drama Academical Theatre. "Bergonye Circus" grand opening took place in 1875. "Alcazar" troupe and horse trainer Sobbot performed there. But 3 years later the plans of the owner had changed: instead of circus appeared drama theatre, which bear the name of Bergonye up to the revolution.
There were also another circuses in Kiev — in particular in 1903 was constructed circus were worked Krutikov with performing horses. On the corner of Sagsaganskogo street and Bolshaya Vasilkovskaya after the war operated the circus in which performed such famous masters as Durov, Zollo and Kio. Especially known was clown and animal trainer — Mikhail Zollo — in one's time tsar Nikolay II impressed by Zollo's performance has presented him his own golden watches. Mikhail Zollo had its own circus troupe and a menagerie with about 200 animals.
Contemporary circus building with 2100 opened its doors in 1960 on ploshad Pobedy. The project of the building was created by architect Jukov; circus became the largest domical building in Kiev.
