History of creation The idea about constructing covered marketplace with all essential services in Kiev appeared as far back as the 1873. But the decision for construction was reached only in 1907 — a competition was announced. Money for the construction was provided by the will of famous Kiev’s patron Lazar Brodsky. He died in 1904 and left about half a million rubbles for the building of covered marketplace under conditions that part of the annual net profit from the marketplace room rent will be turned into charitable aims — on maintenance of Jewish hospital, vocational school and bacteriological institute — building constructed in one's time on Brodsky’s money.
The first prize in the contest took the project of Genrih Gay, who already had an experience of covered marketplace projecting in Warsaw. The front of the building was designed by the apprentices of Kiev art school. Nowadays this compositions("peasant with the bullocks", "milk woman", heads of the bulls, fishes and fishing nets, flying gooses on forged gates) are the adornment not only of the building but this part of the city.
Grandiose building was consecrated on the 3 of July in 1912. In a short of time marketplace started to make surplus profit — money to city treasury brought not only incomings from marketplaces rents but also shops which were placed in marketplace building and a restaurant.
