Mikhail Hrushevsky

Hrushevsky is the famous historian and politician of the early XX century. In 1918 he was elected as the first President of Ukrainian republic. The statue in his honor is placed on the corner of Vladymirskaya street and Taras Shevchenko’s boulevard, in the vicinity of Yellow hall of the National University.

Michael Hrushevsky
One of most famous Ukrainian politicians and philosophers, he was born in Poland in 1866 and educated in Kiev University. After graduating he has taught a Ukrainian history on a Historical faculty of Lviv University. Through 1917 and 1918 he headed the Central Rada, first national parliament of the country and was elected as the President of Ukrainian People’s Republic. After defeat of German occupation forces (whose support Hrushevsky used in the struggle against Red army and local armed gangs) he had fled to Austria but five years later decided to return to motherland.
